The Stroke Prone Population
In today’s world, many stresses and poor lifestyle habits makes many people more and more susceptible to stroke. The chance of having a stroke increases with age. The risk factors could be amenable to treatment in the hope that stroke could be prevented from occurring. The risk of stroke increases with increasing blood pressure but susceptibility can be alleviated by taking medication. Patients with diabetes are also much likely to suffer a stroke with normal blood glucose.
Abnormal blood lipids, smoking and a positive family history independent risk factors but there is relatively minor. The final common pathway for all these risk factors is the arterial disease artherosclerosis, a disease of the larger and medium sized arteries characterized by the deposition of cholesterol and other substances in the arterial wall.
Risk factors for stroke:
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
- Cardiac abnormalities
- Hyperlipidaemia (High blood cholesterol)
- Cigarette smoking
